The latest garden adventure

Postby Shadowgirlau » Sun Jul 25, 2010 10:31 am

Well yesterday I bit the bullet and pulled out all my seedling broccoli. :( Dug this garden over and have made a start on preparing it for the next lot of seedlings.
Also harvested the last of the swede, another row of carrots, the parsnips, and last rows of beetroot. These have their way into my freezer.

Once the deed was done I proceeded to weed the remaining beds and also planted out some more broccoli seedlings and some Chinese cabbage.

After that I decided to put in some foxgloves so these were planted along the fence line just before my vegetable garden entrance. Love foxgloves and I know the bees like them so with any luck these will attract the bees to the garden sooner rather than later.

Have also planted out some herbs, tansy, rue, feverfew and ? darn it I can't remember the last one.

Next on my to do list is to arrange for a truckload of mulch, to spread around the orchard. I also need to make surrounds to fit around the drip line of the fruit trees so the chickens don't do too much damage to the trees roots with all their scratching.
Also need to measure out the lengths of plastic so I can make a start on building some tunnel houses for the garden beds.

The blueberry bushes are covered with berries so I am hopeful of a good crop from the 3 bushes this year.

Haven't been as diligent as I should have been with the garden this year and so I need to lift my game a little. ;)

That all sounds great! Make sure you don't import a load of weeds with the mulch (learnt this at my own expense). The foxgloves sound lovely, and when they flower, they will look glorious. Have you thought about a Lemon Verbena bush? They grow easily and the leaves make a very refreshing tea in summer. The last flood killed mine, but it did take a lot to kill it!
Thanks for the update.

Yes Heidi I have a Lemon Verbena bush on my wish list. Am slowly buying or collecting the plants I want both ornamental and herbal.

I really like foxgloves but they need constant attention as they can become weeds. Still with good care this shouldn't occur.

Have so many weeds on this place a few more isn't going to hurt

If our latest heifer comes back with DNA results that she's not a PHA carrier, she's to be called Foxglove. ;)

A love the herbs and spices for the cattle when I can, inline with the year letter for the dexter assoc.

The silverbeet is looking good as does the brocolli so far. We may actually get some to eat this time around.

I spent some time digging the beds over yet again and of course there was also weeding to do, that little chore is a never ending one ;) With the recent rains here the weeds have sprung up between the beds and so I dispensed with those as well.

The herbs I planted awhile ago are doing okay though are not looking as good as I would really like to see them. Still plenty of time for it to get ahead though.

I transplanted the dahlia tubers today as well. They didn't like being in the wooden pots as haven't looked good at all since being put there. Lets hope they like their new position. I seem to remember reading somewhere that dahlias are dormant in winter so hopefully transplanting them now will be okay.

Well had better get back to work, lots of cleaning up to do as have also made 2 lots of cakes so need to ice the second batch.

Well the garden beds really are looking bare now. Only 3 on the go at this time.

I shall be getting a trailor load of veggie soil this weekend, will add manures to this and we intend on laying out some reticulation to the beds over the next week. With any luck they will be ready for use by 1st September.
Am so tired of hand watering, although I don't mind doing it this way really; I do think it is not efficient enough as watering by hand (for me) is not consistent all over.

Ordered some tomato seeds this week and will start these off inside as soon as I am able to. Really want a good crop of tomatoes this year as we need lots of sauce and relish not to mention bottled tomatoes for adding to meals.

I noticed our fruit trees are starting to bud with little bits of colour showing at the base of these. Told DH and he will spray the trees either today or tomorrow. Mulching the fruit trees is next on our list of jobs to do, after we fix up the veggie gardens.
