Mason Jars and Lids

Postby minnie » Sun May 25, 2008 12:31 pm

I've ordered Mason Jars and plastic lids from http://www.redbacktrading.com.au/ they gave an excellent service and the price was great.

They also have replacement lids and Presto Pressure Cookers (Canners) at the best price I've seen so far in Australia. :D

I'm unsure where to post his request, however I'm hoping someone may have some experience or suggestions for my problem. I have lots of extra beautiful jars - all 4" Vicola, and want to use them for storage and display of legumes, rice, noodles, flours etc etc but can't think of what I can use as a top, or where I might buy something which would serve as an airtight top for them. Any suggestions?

Hi mcgrealm,

Welcome to the forum.

Fowlers Vacola do make a pop-on plastic lid for their jars, but personally I haven't had great success with it. Now I only bottle things in Vacola jars that all the contents will be used immediately, the Stagoni (wrong spelling I know) or Mason jars are a better option.

I'm about to box up a whole lot of FV jars and take them into the Salvation Army, because all they're doing is collecting dust... anyone wanting the big jars that can pick up more than welcome to come and get them. 8-)

Hi Hayley,

Sorry, I'm in Northern NSW just outside of Casino. :(

I'd love them to go to someone who preserves as I bought them from ebay and collected from Brisbane, the woman was a preserver and he mother and grandmother so some of the jars have been used for generations but still good with no chips etc. They cared for them.

The big ones though are just too large for us (only two) and if more come I just open more jars.

I just can't bear wasting food, when I think of how many people in this country let alone overseas go to sleep every night with an empty belly it's just disgusting the waste in our society now.

Hi Hayley,

That is a bummer, I'll see how I go packing them and maybe I could courier and you pay for the courier?

Don't hold me to a definite at the moment, I'm running around like a mad woman with one hundred and ten things to do, but if you want them badly I'll see how they go.

Thanks Vicki for your info. I appreciate that. I'm searching to see if I can get large cork tops maybe so I can use them as storage jars.
Regards

Now that's something I hadn't thought of for some of my big vacola jars, they'd be great with a cork lid.

Let me know how you go, very interested.

Thanks

Hi Vicki,
Have you still got those FV jars, or have you been to the Sallies already? We're the other side of Kyogle but could get over to you in the next fortnight or so. We would love them,
Glyn .

Hi Glyn,

Nope haven't got there yet... we're at Hogarth Range.

Send me a pm with your email address and we can work out when etc.

I may have some recycled jars clean of labels as well if you want them as well.
